Why Does My Air Conditioner Keep Turning Off and On?

Home | Blog | Published on February 6th, 2017

It’s a frustrating issue. Your air conditioner may run, and it may do a decent job of cooling you off. But after a short period, it shuts off again. While you may hear the fan again shortly afterwards, it’s likely to shut off once more, before the room is sufficiently cooled.

This isn’t something you should just accept. You must address the problem ASAP, and that likely means you’ll need to call in a technician. Read on for more information and call our friendly team when you need professional AC repair.

Dirty Air Filter

A dirty air filter can do more harm to an air conditioner than most people realize. When the air filter gets too dirty, air may not be able to flow into the system. Your air conditioner first uses a blower fan to suck air into the system before cooling it. But the clogged air filter would limit the amount of air the blower fan could suck in.

Your air conditioner is designed specifically to cool a set amount of air. When there is airflow missing, you can expect to feel less air moving into your home. In addition, the other components struggle to work properly, which can lead to additional issues:

  • An overworked fan
  • Electrical troubles
  • Frozen indoor coil

The AC system may turn off and on as it attempts to meet the temperature on the thermostat. You could try changing the filter before calling in a technician, but it may not help if the clog has already affected other mechanical or electrical parts.

Poorly Placed Thermostat

It turns out that the placement of a thermostat can have a major effect on how well an air conditioner works. If the thermostat is in the sun, it may always believe the room is 5 degrees warmer than it really is. The same is true for a thermostat near a kitchen or any other source of heat. And it’s also possible to place a thermostat in a location that is unusually cool.

If the thermostat is not properly placed in your home, it might be the reason your air conditioner does not finish cooling your home. A technician may recommend the ideal position to move it to.

Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant is what moves heat outside of your house. This heat exchange process is necessary for cooling, and a lack of refrigerant will interfere. If your air conditioner shuts off and turns on over and over again, it maybe because it is unable to carry through with the refrigeration process.

Improper Sizing

Your air conditioner must be the proper size for your home in order to work properly. Whether it is too big or too small, you may run into issues with its operation. If it is too small, your air conditioner will not be able to cool your home completely and could use up a lot of energy trying.

If the air conditioner is too big, it may “short cycle” (running frequently for short periods of time). Unfortunately, the only option in this case would be to replace the AC unit.
