How to Reduce the Effects of Airborne Allergens in Your Home

Home | Blog | Published on March 21st, 2019

Want to improve your home’s air quality and diminish the impact of airborne allergens like dust, pet dander, and other irritating particles? Here, we break down a few tips to help you breathe the cleanest indoor air and live more comfortably.

Keep it Clean

One of the most effective ways to reduce the number of allergens swirling in your home’s air is to stick to a regular cleaning schedule. By sweeping, vacuuming, and dusting your house on a consistent basis, you’ll prevent these airborne particles from settling into your surfaces.

While you’re cleaning, don’t forget about the areas where dirt, dust, and dander is most likely to accumulate—in your HVAC vents, bathroom exhaust fans, carpets, baseboards, and on soft surfaces like chairs and couches that are used every day, but oftentimes forgotten when it comes to a cleaning regimen.

Monitor Indoor Humidity Levels

Although too much humidity inside a home can promote the growth of mold and mildew, a home that is “too-dry” can be a breeding ground for airborne particles. By monitoring your home’s indoor humidity levels and making adjustments as necessary (by using a humidifier, a dehumidifier, or both), you’ll be able to maintain a comfortable indoor environment while keeping particle accumulation to a minimum.

Get Pets Groomed Regularly

Pet dander is one of the most common indoor allergens. These particles consist of old skin cells, oils, and other microscopic molecules that trigger sneezing fits, runny noses, and red eyes. Even for those who aren’t allergic to pet dander, high levels of dander can generate a “wet dog” smell that may make your home seem musty. By having your pets trimmed and groomed regularly, you’ll lower the risk of skin irritation and reduce the amount of dander they shed.
